Not to be confused with malate dehydrogenase of TCA
Malic enzyme converts malate to pyruvate, releases CO2 and NADPH. Might be used to generate NADPH on substrates with low flux thru PP. Could also with MDH and pyruvate carboxylase would catalyze an ATP dependent metabolic cycle converting NADH to NADPH without a loss of carbon. (sauer, 2005)
